THE FINISH LINE: Steve Nash and the Stretch Provision
Really good episode of the Steve Nash documentary series on Grantland (made by an idol of mine, Jonathan Hock). Posting this for the moment Nash calls his lawyer to clarify the NBA’s stretch provision alone.
I actually think this series raises the chances (however so slightly) that Nash actually retires, because this is giving us all “the reason.” If he retired, there wouldn’t be any speculation. There wouldn’t be any questions. We would all know Nash valiantly fought to come back, but that his “body wouldn’t let him.” You wouldn’t blame Steve. You’d blame the nerves. Or his legs. Or his back.
The Human Highlight Reel
Reporter: What kinds of things would [Lakers] fans do to you?
Larry Bird: They’d be out there shaking our bus and everything. But one night, they beat us and we’re walking out to the bus and this little Mexican guy ran up and just punched me right in the nose! Just jumped up and punched me right in the nose! And that little guy took off so fast. It was almost like it didn’t really happen. I said to my teammates, "Did you see that? That Mexican guy punched me in the nose!"
Happy Birthday, Chuck. I appreciate you. [follow]
High Five, High Five, Got ‘Em Coach
Bill Russell to LeBron James, via Craig Sager:
Hey, thank you for leaving me off your Mount Rushmore. I’m glad you did. Basketball is a team game. It’s not for individual honors.
I won back-to-back State Championships in high school, back-to-back NCAA Championships in college. I won an NBA Championship my first year in the league, an NBA Championship my last year, and nine in between.
And that, Mr. James, is etched in stone.
